AMAZON INDIA OPERATION COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The community engagement charter, started in 2014, aimed to establish harmonious relations with local stakeholders, such as Gram Panchayat, labor officers, police authorities, and development officers. The first five years focused on key areas, such as education, women's empowerment, livelihood, health and hygiene, environmental sustainability, road safety, and disaster response. From 2019 to 2021, Covid relief efforts were facilitated through community centers. In 2021, they introduced a community ambassador model, with NGO partners acting as facilitators and local passionate community ambassadors (Gram Mitra) leading the program. This model was scaled up to the AMZL network in 2022, with social work graduates appointed as community ambassadors (Pragati Mitra) to address complex needs in last-mile communities. They bridge the link between site and community, create awareness, and deliver access to social entitlements.  Holistically, they have touched 4.1 million lives through the community ambassador approach.

Amazon’s community engagement program, rooted in their goal to be a good neighbor to their communities, focuses on deep-impact initiatives. Our objective as a consulting partner was to assist in launching and structuring a pilot initiative that combats hunger and malnutrition in vulnerable communities by:

  • Creating access to safe, sufficient, and nutritious food,

  • Driving awareness around government schemes like POSHAN Abhiyan,

  • Empowering marginalized groups such as women, children, widows, and persons with disabilities.

OBJECTIVES

Through this collaboration, we contributed to laying the foundation for a scalable and sustainable food security model. This initiative is currently in its pilot phase, with potential for scale based on its impact and learnings.

IMPACT

We provided strategic and operational support in the following key areas:

OUR SCOPE OF WORK

Program Design & Monitoring Framework

We supported the creation of a clear results chain to guide implementation and track success metrics. This included dashboards and templates for periodic reporting.

Awareness Campaigns

We developed models for conducting localized awareness sessions

on nutrition, hygiene, and government food schemes.

Community Needs Assessment

We designed pre- and post-intervention surveys to baseline and

measure food security outcomes, helping quantify malnutrition

levels and track improvements.

Content Development

We advised on tailored educational materials for different demographics, especially focusing on women and children.

Sustainability Planning

We helped Amazon explore innovative and sustainable solutions

for long-term impact, integrating locally appropriate nutritional

practices into the Food Security charter.

Stakeholder Engagement

We built a framework for effective mobilization of local communities,

government bodies, and Gram Panchayats, ensuring high scheme

participation.
